- Sample Description
- Forms series with Clausthalite. Galena is usually pure, in the sense that substitution of other metal ions for lead is not very extensive. This sample appears quite pure, containing only a very minor amount of sphalerite. The largest size particles are opaque throughout the spectral region because of intense absorption in the conduction band which extends into the infrared. Hunt, G.R., J.W. Salisbury, C.J. Lenhoff, 1971, Visible and Near-Infrared spectra of Minerals and Rocks: IV. Sulphides and Sulphates. Mod. Geol. 3, pp 1-14. Grain size fractions are indicated by the extension after the sample number: .3 = 74-250 µm (compared to HS samples with the .3B extension, a grinding process was used which resulted in trace metal shavings from grinder) .3fg = ground to a finer grain size (unspecified) than the .3 sample
